Is Kern River safe to swim in?
Our official stance is you shouldn’t swim in the Kern River unless you’re with a guide and while wearing a PFD (personal flotation device). So while we believe your best bet is with a guided tour, we feel it’s important to share best practices to make sure you can enjoy the Kern River safely.

WE ARE OPEN YEAR ROUND! Our 6th summer camping with you at Camp Kernville, and even through these unknown times, we had an awesome trip. Camp Kernville has an easy, efficient reservation system and the location is perfect!
Can you Boondock in Sequoia National Park?
It is allowed in many areas of the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument. There are certain areas where dispersed camping is prohibited and these areas are posted. Dispersed camping is free but you must have a CAMPFIRE PERMIT. These can be obtained fore free at Readyforwildfire.org.
Is there a campground on the upper Kern River?
The campground has drinking water and vault toilets. We also have campsite photos for two private campgrounds located on the Upper Kern including Camp Kernville and Mountain & River Adventures. Both are great campgrounds and Mountain & River Adventures offers rafting and mountain biking tours.
Where can I camp near Kernville CA?
Headquarters Campground 37 campsites six miles from Kernville on the Kern River. Campsites are a mix of standard, RV, and tent-only sites. Picnic tables and campfire rings for each site. Some sites overlook the river. Camp Three Campground 50 campsites on the Upper Kern River. Sites are close to the river with paved access.
What can I do in the Kern Valley?
Attractions include the Kern Valley Museum, Silver City Ghost Town, Kern River Fish Hatchery, and booking a white water rafting trip on the Kern. Federal campground reservations can be made through Recreation.gov for their reservations. Campsites can be reserved up to 6 months in advance and are recommended during the peak summer camping season.
