Procedure
- Go to your launching station and stand next to the zero-end of the yardstick.
- Hold your launcher slightly horizontally (without dropping the cotton ball).
- Pull back on the pencil so the inner tube extends two inches out the back of the launcher.
- Release the pencil and watch your cotton ball fly!
What is the science behind a cotton ball launcher?
When you released the pencil, the energy became kinetic and the cotton ball should have gone flying through the air! The farther you pulled back on your launcher the more potential energy you added to the system—and the more you stored the more kinetic energy should have been released when you shot the cotton ball.
What will happen if you squeeze the cotton balls with water?
Packing cotton balls in water They are incredibly light because most of their volume is just empty space filled with air. When you drop a cotton ball into water, the water quickly creeps into all those tiny spaces between and inside the hollow cotton fibres.
How do you make a cotton slingshot ball?
Place a cotton ball on the top, so that it rests inside the narrower tube. Hold your launcher slightly horizontally without dropping the cotton ball. Pull back on the pencil so that the inner tube extends two inches out the back of the launcher. Carefully aim your cotton ball—away from people!

Place a cotton ball in the launching cup, push the cup down just a little bit and let go. What happened to the ball? Did it fly? Did it go high or low?
What happens when you release the object from the catapult?
When the object is released from the catapult, it faces air resistance before getting to its target. The science behind the fun is called transferring energy. When you pull the rubber band back, you are applying force over distance and doing work on the rubber band.
What physics concept is a catapult based on?
The physics concept that a catapult is based on is that stored potential energy can be converted into moving (kinetic) energy. When the object is released from the catapult, it faces air resistance before getting to its target. The science behind the fun is called transferring energy.
What type of energy is used to launch a catapult?
When you prepare the catapult to launch, you add energy to it. This energy is stored in the launching device as potential, or stored, energy. The catapult you are about to make uses elastic potential energy* stored in a wooden stick as you bend it.
