The Canon EOD 650D / Rebel T4i is the company’s latest addition to its novice-oriented ‘Rebel’ series. It is largely because of the rise of large sensor mirrorless models that in today’s market an entry-level DSLR must offer more than just high image quality to entice compact camera upgraders.

What is the difference between the Canon EF-S 18-55mm and EF- S 55-250mm lenses?
Both lenses incorporate specialist optics to achieve exceptional image clarity – the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS employing an aspherical lens element with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS benefiting from an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens element.
How big is the field of view on the canon 55-250mm?
These two lenses in a ‘combined kit’ form would provide you with approximately 28 to 400 mm equiv (14.3x) field of view, with image stabilization, on an EF-S compatible Canon digital SLR (such as the Digital Rebel XTi / EOS 400D). No word on price for the 55-250 mm IS at this point but the 18-55 mm IS should be $199 when it arrives in October.
Should I get the 18-55mm or the 55-250mm?
With the 18-55mm, watch out for bad distortion at 18mm (correct RAW files with DPP in one click) and bad CA at 28-35mm (correct RAW files with DPP in one click). With the 55-250mm, watch out for low contrast and decreasing sharpness at 200mm and longer. I have both these lenses and can tell you the sweep spot for the 18-55 IS is 35mm at f/5.6.
How sharp is the canon 18-55 is?
The 18-55 IS is pretty sharp for a kit lens, so you don’t lose a great deal out of using the DPP lens distortion correction and rotation tools. I usually compensate for them by bumping the sharpness up 1 point, though this can make the noise more obvious in low light shots.
