Wood dowel pins are available fluted (multi-grooved) or spiral grooved. They help reinforce joints and support shelves with cabinet making projects as well as they are used for furniture joinery.
Why are dowel pins fluted?
Fluted sides allow for even glue distribution, while allowing any trapped air or glue to exit the hole. Chamfered ends makes inserting the dowel pin into the hole fast and accurate.
Why are there grooves on wooden dowels?
The surface of the dowel is grooved. This allows the glue on the bottom of the hole to spread on the surface of the dowel when the dowel is pushed into the hole. Presupposition to this is that the depth of the hole is precise about 1 mm deeper than the length of the dowel.

How do I choose a dowel?
Diameter: Ideally, the diameter of the dowel should be approximately 1/3 – and never more than 1/2 – of the thickness of the wood being joined. For example, if your product is 1” thick, you should be considering a dowel pin 3/8” in diameter. If your product is 1-1/4” thick, a 7/16” diameter would be more suitable.
Is hardwood dowel strong?
Test results show that dowels are the strongest method for creating this type of joint. The dowel joint in solid oak failed at an average of 650 pounds pressure, mortise and tenon joints failed at 500 pounds and biscuits failed at 325 pounds. In the sheet goods test, dowels were far superior to any other method.
How deep should dowels be?
The holes to accommodate the dowels should each be drilled about 1/16 of an inch deeper than 1/2 of the length of the dowel section being used. Dowels 1 1/2-inches long are commonly used, so in this case, you would drill each of your doweling holes to 13/16 of an inch in length.
