Before initiating the salat, it is important that you have the intention to pray. Raise your hands up next to your ears and shoulders, then say Allāhu akbar (الله أَكْبَر). This translates to “Allah is the greatest.” Do this while standing (or sitting if you can’t stand).
What do you say before Al Fatiha prayer?
It is reported while praying Salah it was the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to silently recite a supplication in-between the takbeer e-tahrimah (inital allahu akbar to commence salah) and Surah Fatihah. These duas are known as dua al istiftah or the opening supplication.

What do you say before Khutbah?
Stand up and recite the Khutbat-ul-Haajjah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to praise Allah before starting his khutbah. The Khutbat-ul-Haajjah is read in Arabic and is: Al-hamdu Lillaahi nahmaduhu wa nasta’eenahu wa nastaghfiruhu, wa na’oodhu billaahi min shuroori anfusinaa wa min sayi’aati a’maalinaa.
What is thana in Salat?
After the takbeer tahrimah it is sunnah to recite the thana (subhanaka Allahumma..), for the imam, muqtadi (one following the imam) or munfarid (one praying alone). If one joins salaah and finds the imam reciting qirat, then there is no need to read thana, one should concentrate and listen to the qirat.
