All spent nuclear fuel was removed from the site by 2005, the turbine hall was demolished in 2011, and by 2016 underground waste storage vaults had been emptied and decontaminated. Defuelling was completed in 2005. Demolition of all buildings except the ponds and two reactor buildings was completed in 2019.
Why was Bradwell decommissioned?
The two Magnox-type reactors at Bradwell were brought into service in 1962. Both have now been defuelled, decommissioned and covered in weatherproof cladding to create “safe stores” where waste will be kept for around 70 years to allow any radiation to decay naturally. After that, the site can be cleared.
